Qatar Islamic Bank (QIB) has announced it is upgrading its mobile app with an e-commerce platform as it looks to move beyond just banking.

In a statement, the bank said it is launching QIB Marketplace, a shopping platform which offers a range of items including electronics, household goods, consumer durables, clothes and perfumes. The marketplace will available exclusively on the QIB Mobile App, bringing the worlds of banking and e-commerce closer together while it will focus on supporting local merchants and promoting ‘Qatari Brands, the bank said.

Among its features, customers can shop using their credit cards, redeem their existing Absher points or use a combination of both. Alternatively, they can also choose to debit their current or savings account to pay for purchases or combine it with Absher Points redemption. By combining banking with e-commerce on the same app, the bank is seeking to leverage the app’s payment options for greater flexibility when shopping online.

All purchases made through QIB Marketplace will qualify for complimentary doorstep delivery, with 24-hour delivery available for select products, the bank said.

Mr. D. Anand, QIB’s General Manager – Personal Banking Group, said: “With the introduction of QIB Marketplace, we’re not just leading in digital banking innovation; we are creating a new paradigm by offering our customers a marketplace that goes beyond the traditional boundaries of banking.

He added: “This platform is a part of our commitment to provide value-added services that enrich our customers’ lives, affirming that with QIB, you’re in control of more than just your finances.”

In November, QIB announced it was expanding its Direct Remit Service to the UK as part of a collaboration with Standard Chartered Bank. Ernst & Young also recently revealed a key trend in the banking sector in the MENA region, highlighting a shift towards customer experience initiatives with the aim of directing competition away from products to lifestyle banking.
