Vipps MobilePay has rolled out a new ‘unified’ version of the MobilePay app to 4.5 million Danish users, paving the way for more seamless cross-border payments within the Nordic region.
This update is a significant milestone for the firm, as it marks the first time the company has been on one joint platfrom in Denmark, Finland, and Norway since the merger of Vipps and MobilePay in 2022. The new app was launched in Finland in January meaning 11.5 million users in Norway, Finland and Denmark have now been united across the same platform.
Rune Garborg, CEO of Vipps MobilePay said he expects customers to be able to use Vipps MobilePay across Norway, Denmark, and Finland before the summer with Sweden following soon after.
He added: “The payments market is dominated by global tech giants. That’s why building a unified Nordic solution is crucial to us. By joining forces, we’ve become a more powerful Nordic player, developing scalable solutions ready to tackle the fierce competition. Our main goal is to become available in all payment situations across the Nordics,”
In addition to seamless cross boarder payments in the Nordics, the company is aiming to launch in-store tap-to-pay for iPhone and Android later this year. Before it does, it is awaiting a final agreement between the EU Commission and Apple on fair competition.
“This past year has defined us as a company. We’ve set very ambitious goals, and it’s thanks to exceptional teamwork that we have achieved them. This milestone is a testament to the dedication, talent and team spirit we have at Vipps MobilePay. This is truly a very, very good day!,” Garborg said.
