Vipps MobilePay has unveiled a new payments app as part of the company’s plans to create a unified wallet that can be used across the Nordic countries.

The launch comes two years after EU’s competition authorities approved the merger between Norway’s Vipps and Denmark’s MobilePay, allowing the brands to work together on a joint platform.

The mobile payment app, which will be branded locally as MobilePay in Denmark and Finland, and Vipps in Norway, enables consumers to pay bills and for products and services. Tapping into the rise of mobile payments across Scandinavian countries the app will also allow people to send money to each other and give businesses an alternative method of accepting money other than having to use cash.

The first phase of the roll-out has begun in Finland where it is being introduced to 2.6 million Finnish users and Finnish businesses, the company said. Once the Finnish implementation of the new app is completed, Vipps MobilePay plans to expand the solution to Denmark and enable users there to begin using the app by April 1st.

Speaking on the launch, Rune Garborg, CEO of Vipps MobilePay said: “This is a big day for the whole company. We are one important step closer to our goal of building the most secure and easy to use wallet in the Nordics. With a unified app and platform, we have the capacity to swiftly introduce new and better solutions to the market. We’re super excited to unveil new products that make life easier for users and businesses.”
