Littlepay has completed the integration of American Express on its transit payments platform, allowing American Express Cardmembers to tap and pay when using a range of designated public transit systems.
Over 250 transit operators that use Littlepay will be able to start accepting American Express, increasing the number of transit systems where the card can be used, the company said.
The firm, which has a growing number of transit operators across the UK, Europe, USA, Latin America and Australia said its merchants can start accepting American Express as soon as their devices become certified.
Contactless tap-to-pay technology has become increasingly popular in recent years. A recent Visa Future of Urban Mobility Survey found that 91 percent of riders expect public transit to offer contactless payments, and nearly a third cited contactless payments as a top feature that would entice them to use public transit in the first place.
“Connecting the Littlepay platform to American Express is an important step towards our goal of offering payment choice to public transport riders. Those who always reach for their American Express Card when they tap to pay in retail will be able to do the same when they tap to ride on transit,” said Paul Griffin, Global Head of Commerce at Littlepay
Matthew Robinson, EVP, Global Head of Network and Acquiring Solutions at American Expres, added: “The American Express network is growing and expanding around the world, and we’re committed to empowering our Cardmembers to use their American Express Cards to Tap, Pay and Go on their daily commute. By collaborating with Littlepay, we give our Cardmembers more places to tap by enabling more transit authorities to accept contactless payments from American Express.”
