Portugese supermarket chain Continente is investing €3 million in its in-store technology as part of a major upgrade, the company has announced.

In partnership with NCR, it said it is aiming to introduce a new self-checkout system to 70 Continente brand stores by the end of 2023.

The system will allow payment by all means, including cash, bank card, Continente Card and Continente Pay. Customers will also have the option of paying for goods via the Continente SIGA app.

“In addition to the additional benefits for the customer, a scale was also incorporated into each piece of equipment for registering fruit & vegetable and bakery & pastry items, biotic readers that allow faster registration of items and the use of new payment methods, such as the Dá Card. Furthermore, we improved the process for the store, where self-checkout employees take on a more dynamic role and are closer to customers” said Miguel Ramos, Director of Operational Development at MC.

He added: “The feedback on the use of this more autonomous purchasing model has been very positive, both from employees and customers. With this new concept, in many cases we increased the usage rate by 10 percentage points and we already have adoption rates above 50% in many stores.”

In June, it was revealed that the number of stores allowing customers to scan items as they shop grew by nearly a quarter globally, last year, and is expected to triple by 2028. According to RBR’s study, ‘Mobile Self-Scanning and Checkout-Free 2023’, 57,000 stores now enable customers to scan items using either their smartphone, a device provided by the retailer, or both.  This includes 11,500 additional stores to offer the service in 2022, reflecting the increased investment by retailers in the technology
