Amazon is expanding its palm-recognition service in the US with Whole Foods customers in the Denver area the latest to welcome the feature which allows shoppers pay at checkout with the swipe of a hand.

The company announced that Amazon One had reached 11 Whole Foods Market stores in the metropolitan Denver area including the SouthGlenn store which becomes only the fourth location in the country to offer Amazon Dash Cart.

This smart shopping cart technology automatically tallies the cost of the items in the cart and charges them to the shopper’s Amazon credit or debit account without the need for a palm scan.

The palm-identity feature, which was first welcomed by Whole Foods at a Seattle store in 2021, allows shoppers to link their palms with their credit cards when they enroll in the Amazon One programme. This can be done for one hand or both.

The latest roll out comes as Amazon, which is the parent company of Whole Foods, ramps up the expansion of the contactless technology across the US. Last month, the firm signed a deal with Panera to make it the first national restaurant to use Amazon One for payments and loyalty.

Writing in a blog post, Dilip Kumar, Vice President, AWS Applications said: “I’m thrilled to announce that Panera is taking MyPanera to a whole new level with Amazon One’s newly launched loyalty linking capability.

“Amazon One, our palm recognition service that lets customers enter, identify, and pay, will for the first time provide the additional capability of linking MyPanera loyalty memberships to customers’ Amazon One profiles. Panera is the first restaurant chain to offer Amazon One’s new loyalty linking capability, allowing guests to take full advantage of their MyPanera loyalty program, as well as pay for their purchases with just their palm.”
