Albert Heijn, a leading Dutch supermarket chain, has introduced a new AI-powered feature named Scan & Kook in its mobile app as part of plans to reduce food waste and enhance customer satisfaction.

The Scan & Kook function provides recipe suggestions by analysing images of ingredients that users upload, whether from their refrigerators at home or while shopping in the store, according to the company.

Developed by Gen AI Labs, a startup initiative created by Albert Heijn in 2023, the feature strengthens the company’s commitment to technological advancement and furthers its ambitions to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030 compared to the 2016 levels.

Speaking on the new tool, Sjoerd Holleman, director of strategy, products and analytics at Albert Heijn, said, “Within our company we use Gen AI, which makes a positive contribution to the shopping experience of our customers and the job satisfaction of colleagues. We are working with our teams to further develop and implement this technology.”
